It's an evolution of expressions like 'ayeye' / 'ayoyoyo' and was first used to express approval/appreciation of good dancing.
As with most slang words, no one knows its exact origins, but it's presumed to have started in Joburg township culture.
It means delight, excitement, agreement, approval or can be used as a greeting/goodbye.
It is uniquely South African

@Marta: no es afrikaans...viene de un idimoa de estos de tribus negras..la verdad que ni se de qual ..jeje..pero tu, tramposa!! :P ...googling not allowed significa eso: no se puede usar google ni internet en general... sí, la definicion obviamente está bien... pero ahora con motivo de un evento lo usan con un significado específico que tiene una expresión en inglés...jeje
